We have just bought a Chev Motor. Block number 3970010 Head casting 3927185 Also found TC76 Can you tell if we have a 302,327 or 350 . If that TC 76 means 1976 I am thinking its a 350. Any comments on what we have bought? and what we can do to it???? Thanks Monty.

you will need the crankshaft casting number to id what size it was originally.
327 = 4.000" x 3.25" (Gen.I, 5.7" rod)
350 = 4.000" x 3.48" (Gen.I, 5.7" rod)
block number
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4
head number
3927185....69-76...307/327/350..70cc chambers

And what you can do with it, is mainly up to what you want to do and how much cash to want to sped on it.

The 3970010 casting number was more commonly used for 350, although it could also have been a 69 327 or 302 (which I doubt), 305 or 350. look on the back of the block right behind the drivers side valve cover on the flange that the transmission bolts to. Normally you will see something like 5.0 or 5.7. This will tell you the engine size. If you can give me the code stamped on the front of the block on the pad behind the alternator I can give you more information on what it is and what it came from.
