Im sure this is a beat up question and old but I have a engine that is confusing me as far as being able to ID it . The block casting number is 3914678. Build date stamp shows E-28-8. The partial vin is 18J284645 and the engine ID is V053THH or V053IHH I'm pretty sure its a "T" but you never know.. Everything I find says its a 350ci Engine But I keep finding "HH" listed as a 1969 engine for the most part. I would greatly appreciate any help.

I see the the same decoded numbers you found. The only way, I think, you will know, is check the casting number on the crankshaft. Since the bore is the same size, only the stroke is different and the crank casting number should decode to one or the other. Sorry not much help otherwise.

OK, this is the information I have on that suffex code THH. I can find nothing for IHH.

THH 71 307 Truck 200 L-14 Manual 2-Brl C-20 & C-30, Motor home
THH 82 350 Truck 160 LT-9 Manual 4-Brl C-20 & C-30

The block casting number comes up as these possibilities.

3914678....302.....68....2 Bolt Main...Z-28 Camaro
3914678....327.....68....2 Bolt Main
3914678....350.....68....2 Bolt Main

I think you might double check both the casting numbers and the numbers and letters on the pad in front of the right cylinder head to verify them. I haven't found anything that suggests it might be a 350.

Thanks for trying to help guys .. Ed these numbers are correct checked, rechecked and had another mech. recheck also The letter in question is the letter I it was not the letter T. It has a 350ci crank in it also zsparkman. It has matching 291 heads with a build date of E-24-8 and E-23-8 no acc. holes on the front of heads. but has the threaded boss for a temp sender. I had another site tell me it was a engine built for 1969 and it was installed in a full size 1968 car by the partial vin. 350ci 300hp full size HH code 1969.. If you run across any better info I would be grateful

Richard, been away for a while. 1967 was the last year GM SBC engines were built without the accessory holes in the heads. According to my information there was no suffex code IHH. This does not mean that they did not have one for what is now called a crate engine, but I have no information on it. Also, keep in mind that the 5.0 305 and 5.7 350 both used the same crank. However, the 305 was not in production in that era. Very possible that your combination is not stock for that year, could have been for marine use or a replacement engine.

HH with a 3914678 block is a 68 Impala 327/275hp with Turbo 400 transmission. Makes sense with the partial vin you posted. 68 Impala from Janesville
